How to restore rusted metal to its original appearance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sandpaper
  • Grinder
  • Metal primer
  • Metal etching solution
  • Paper masks
  1. Step 1

The first an most necessary step is to remove the existing rust. This can be done a number of ways from sand-blasting to grinding but for the sake of the home enthusiast we will concentrate with using just sandpaper. One must first assess whether or not the metal object can be worth restoring, is there just surface rust or has the rust completely eaten through the metal? Surface rust and moderate rust are worth restoring anything else and it might not be worth your time. Begin by sanding all exhisting rust down to bare shiny metal. This is quick work with a grinder but may take a considerable amount of time with plain sandpaper.

  2. Step 2

Using an acid etch solution (available at a hardware store, be sure to read and follow directions carefully!!!) apply directly to the metal, allow time to react and rinse off with copious amounts of clean water. The metal should turn a golden color and is now ready for primer. Note: At this point refrain from touching the metal with your bare hands as oils in the hands will cause rust, instead wear gloves when handling.

  3. Step 3

Spray on a suitable bare metal primer (rustoleam etc.) You may have to apply several thin coats to get ample coverage. If dust or dirt particles get into the coat let it dry then sand with a fine grit sandpaper and spray another coat thereafter.

  4. Step 4

Topcoat with a metal appropriate enamel or lacquer. If these steps have been followed the metal should look as good as new and will withstand rust for many years to come.

Tips & Warnings
  • When sanding always wear a particle mask
  • When spray painting always spray in a well ventilated area
