How to Disable POP UP Balloons in Windows XP

Ever been annoyed by all the pop up balloons that Windows XP decides to throw at you when you boot your PC.

A Simple Registry Change can stop all these pop ups from showing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP PC
  • Registry Editing Program (regedit)
  1. Step 1

    Open the registry editor by selecting the "start" button and then Selecting the "run" Selection from the menu

  2. Step 2
    open regedit
    open regedit

    type in regedit into the Run Command Field

  3. Step 3

    Once the registry is open brows to the key :

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

    By selecting the + Icon to the left of each registry key section

  4. Step 4
    Create A New Key
    Create A New Key

    Once you find the key, Right click on the right pane and select "New DWord Value" this will insert a new Key called "New Value#1"

  5. Step 5
    Rename key
    Rename key

    Rename the New key by Right Clicking the name and select "rename" as an option.

  6. Step 6

    Rename the key to "EnableBalloonTips"

  7. Step 7
    Change DWord Value
    Change DWord Value

    Once you have renamed the Key, you can double click the key to edit the DWORD Value to 1, by double clicking on the Key Name

  8. Step 8

    Close the registry then Reboot the PC to make this registry change take effect

Tips & Warnings
  • Before making any changes to the registry, you should always back it up.
  • If the change does not take effect, go back into the registry to double check the settings and locations of the key.
  • As with any registry change there are risk that inadvertent changes can cause bad effects up to and including rendering your PC totally useless.

on 5/28/2008 this tip is wrong. you change the value to '0', not '1' to disable popup balloons.
