It can be helpful to copy MS-DOS text if you are using it for IT reasons. You might have read or learned how to copy text from a “Command Prompt” window using your mouse. Another way to copy this text is by using your keyboard. These steps will show you how.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer using Microsoft Windows
Step1
Click “Start” and then “Run.” The “Run” dialog box will appear. In the “Open” box, type “cmd” and click “OK.” The “Command Prompt” window will open.
Step2
Right click the title bar of the “Command Prompt” window. Point to “Edit” and then click “Mark.”
Step3
Using your mouse, click the beginning of the text you want to copy.
Step4
Hold down the “Shift” key. Using your arrow keys, select the text you wish to copy.
Step5
Use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+C” to copy the text.
Step6
Go to the Windows-based program where you wish to paste the text. Use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+V” to paste the text.
