You wash your clothes all the time in the washing machine, but did you ever think of actually washing your washing machine? Sounds odd? Washing your washing machine every so often can help keep your washing machine looking clean and smelling fresh, and keep your clothes washing at their cleanest potential.

  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 2 cups bleach

Step1
Let the tub basis of your washing machine fill with water, leaving the lid up.
Step2
Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the washing machine.
Step3
Allow the washing machine to sit there with the water and vinegar in it for 1 hour.
Step4
Restart the washer and let it go through a full wash and rinse cycle.
Step5
One the cycle is done, open the washer, let it refill again with water and put in 2 cups of bleach.
Step6
Allow the washing machine to sit there with the water and bleach in it for 1 hour.
Step7
Restart the washer and let it go through a full wash and rinse cycle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean your washing machine every so often when it appears especially grimy or dingy.
  • Do not get obsessive about keeping your washer clean. You don't need to clean it all the time, just here and there throughout the year. No need to add too much bleach to the septic.
