Properly functioning spark plugs are essential to the life and reliability of your vehicle. The spark plugs provide a spark so the fuel can combust, allowing the engine to continue running. It is important to check the quality of your spark plugs with every oil change.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/8 inch ratchet
  • 3/8 ratchet extension
  • 5/8 inch socket
  • Spark plug socket boot
  1. Step 1

Turn off your vehicle and allow it to cool completely before starting any car maintenance project. This should take about an hour. Pop the hood and gather the tools needed, as listed in the Things list. Disconnect the positive battery terminal.

  2. Step 2

Remove the spark plug wire by grasping it firmly and pulling while wiggling it. The boot should give easily; if not, consider using a spark plug wire puller. This tool can be found at any auto parts store.

  3. Step 3

Address only one wire and spark plug at a time to avoid confusion and replacing the wrong wire to the wrong spark plug. This can cause the engine to fire in the wrong order, causing unnecessary wear and tear on your engine.

  4. Step 4

Use compressed air to blow the area out where the spark plug sits to get rid of debris and corrosion. This will keep it from falling into the combustion chamber on the cylinder head, which can cause major damage.

  5. Step 5

Place the spark plug boot into the socket and then down onto the spark plug you are removing. Make sure to twist the correct way to loosen the spark plug. Remember the rule: righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. The spark plug should come out stuck in the rubber socket boot.
