How to Connect a Spark Plug Wire

Replacing and maintaining spark plugs are essential tasks to keeping your vehicle engine running smoothly. Part of this engine maintenance is attaching spark plug wires correctly. This task not only ensures proper function of your vehicle, but is a step in practicing proper vehicle maintanence safely.

Instructions

1. Blow out the area where the spark plug wire connects using an air compressor. This cleans grit and corrosion from the area, allowing for a better connection and spark.

2. Lube the threads of the spark plug with Dielectric grease. This reduced friction, cleans the area and protects the spark plug. Dielectric grease can be found at any automotive parts store.

3. Use a "boot" or piece of 3/8-inch ID rubber hose to attach the plug wire to the new spark plug. Use a twisting motion on the boot until it's seated on the spark plug. This will help save time and prevent costly damage to the threads.

4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for reattaching the remaining spark plug wires. Replace them one at a time to avoid confusion and mixing up the wires. Reconnect the battery ground and start the engine to test for proper installation and spark plug response.

• Always disconnect the ground on the battery before replace or maintaining anything on the engine.

• Always inspect new parts before installing to check for defects.

• Spark plug wires should be check and replaced every 30,000 miles or two years on most vehicles. Check your vehicle manual for more specific instructions.
