Step 1
Wear the appropriate clothing for stalking as you are deer hunting. The best clothing is camouflage. But there are several different types of camo. Most experienced hunters use camo that matches the terrain they are hunting. Stalking requires that you be hidden as much as possible. Deer have excellent eyesight and pick up movement quite easily.

Step 2
Cover your human scents when stalking. Deer have a keen sense of smell. They will pick up the scent of cologne, deodorant and scented soaps. Use unscented soap. There are many different types of scent inhibiters on the market. When stalking, always use a scent inhibiter on the bottom of your boots and on your person.

Step 3
Understand that stalking is movement by stealth. You must move slowly through the woods and stop about every 3 to 4 steps. When you stop, look into the distance and try to detect any movement. When stalking, it is critical to have the wind in your face.

Step 4
Hunt deer by stalking in the latter part of the hunting season. Deer do not move as much during this time because they have been pressured and stressed during the regular hunting season. They tend to bed down more during the latter part of the season. Stalking is a way to get them up and moving so that you can see them.
