A treasure chest birthday cake is the perfect centerpiece for a child's birthday party. It works well with a pirate theme, mermaid theme or even a beach theme. Making a treasure chest birthday cake is easier than it looks, but you don't have to tell your guests that.
Bake a cake in a 13x9x2 inch pan. Let it cool completely.
2
Cut the cake into three equal rectangles. Take the middle rectangle and cut it diagonally into two triangles. The two remaining rectangles will act as the top and the base of the treasure chest.
3
Frost the base rectangle of the cake, and then insert some wooden dowels to help support the top rectangle, which will be the lid of the treasure chest. You can hide the dowels behind gold foil chocolate coins.
4
Place the two triangles on either end of the base and frost them. The triangles will help support the top of the cake.
5
Frost the top piece of cake and put in place atop the triangle wedges and dowels.
6
Wrap strips of black liquorice along the top and front of the treasure chest, to mimic leather straps. Add yellow or gold candies along each side of the liquorice, for nails.
7
Add more gold coins, candy ring pops and rock candy "treasures" inside the chest to complete the look.
Tips & Warnings
If you are not a fan of black liquorice, use some fruit-by-the-foot or other fruit leather for the treasure chest details.
