1. Purchase paints which have low volatile compounds (VOC's) for an eco-friendly way to decorate your walls. If decorating with wallpaper, look for natural, non-vinyl products such as split bamboo or grass. Not only will eco-friendly paints and wallpapers help to protect the environment, they are guaranteed not to emit toxic gasses that can contaminate the air inside your home.

2. Look for area rugs made from recycled products and natural materials whose construction does not harm the environment. Floor coverings made from jute, wool, sisal, coconut husks and sea grass are generally durable and long-lasting. Be sure to check the label to make sure you are purchasing a "green" product.

3. Install hardwood floors certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC ensures that the wood was harvested using sustainable methods. You may also choose reclaimed wood floors or alternative eco-friendly flooring such as cork or bamboo.

4. Choose environmentally friendly furniture when decorating your home. One of the best ways to ensure that your furniture is eco-friendly, is to purchase vintage or antique furniture, preventing the pieces from ending up in a landfill and avoiding new furniture manufacturing. When buying new, look for FSC certification, low VOC's and furniture made from recycled material.

5. Search for eco-friendly materials when decorating with fabrics. Upholstery, pillows and drapes can be found in bamboo-based fabric as well as organic cotton and wool. If buying dyed fabric, look for environmentally friendly, solution dyed fabrics.

6. Go green, literally, by decorating your spaces with plants and clay pots. Not only do plants bring a touch of the outdoors in, they help to clean the air inside your home and create a serene living environment for you and your family.
