Step 1
Find a good repair manual for your make and model car. Clymer and Chilton are two good sources.
-
Step 2
Get a basic understanding of how your exhaust system works. Identify the manifold, the catalytic converter, the muffler and exhaust pipe. Don't be afraid to dig in to the how and why of oxygen sensors and other performance-related equipment.
-
Step 3
Consider going stainless. Corrosion is public enemy number one to exhaust systems. If you want the look of stainless anyway and are willing to put down the bucks, try the stainless exhaust system for your car. The old adage here rings true that you get what you pay for.
-
Step 4
Visit an auto show in your area. You can get a good overview of the different car exhaust systems available and you'll also be able to hear the exhaust and compare shop notes with other gear heads.
-
Step 5
Make sure the manifolds match. Modifying your car's exhaust means you must match the new manifold to the engine block. Searching a good auto parts site should yield a few good choices that will fit your particular make and model of car or look for a modification shop specializing in exhaust system modification.
