A snorkel is a key piece of equipment for a successful snorkeling or scuba diving experience. A well fitting snorkel will allow you to breathe underwater while enjoying the scenery of the area where you're diving, or conserve air in your tank when surfacing during a scuba dive. Snorkels are also fun to use in the backyard swimming pool.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider your main use for a snorkel. There are different sizes and compositions for different levels and types of diving.

  2. Step 2

Visit your local sporting goods store so you can actually try on snorkels.

  3. Step 3

Look at the design of the snorkel. Smooth-line snorkels with normal turns provide better air flow.

  4. Step 4

Think about the size of the snorkel. A wider snorkel allows for better, deeper breathing but may also let in water and be harder to clear when surfacing. Modern snorkels come with a type of ping pong ball feature that only allows the airway to open when you breathe out. This provides a water tight seal when not in use.

  5. Step 5

Watch for a flexible design in the actual mouth piece. This will allow a tighter more comfortable fit.

  6. Step 6

Ask about snorkels that come in sections rather than in one whole piece. This allows you to replace broken or damaged parts when necessary, rather than having to buy a whole new snorkel.

  7. Step 7

Purchase snorkels that are a composite material of plastic and silicone. This improves the durability and life of the snorkel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Snorkels with flexible tubing at the turn allow for a better fit and more flexibility when going back and forth between the snorkel and the tank air regulator.
  • Bigger snorkels usually have more features and attachments available.
