You can add a border to any frame with Adobe InDesign whether it is created with the Text tool or the Rectangle tool. The border of the frames can be invisible or colored. You can also change the stroke (thickness of the border line) or the size of the frame itself. Read on to learn how to add borders in InDesign.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Make the guides visible by going to "View" and selecting "Show Guides." This will allow you to see a layout grid.
Step2
Click and drag the "InDesign Type" tool to create a frame for your text or graphic. If you plan to change the shape of the border, you can select the Rectangle tool instead. You'll see other shape options if you hold down the mouse over this tool.
Step3
Use the "Selection" tool to click on the corners of the frame to adjust its size.
Step4
Select a line (or no line if you want no border to show when printed) from the InDesign control palette located at the top to change the thickness of the border while the frame is still highlighted.
Step5
Choose a color by clicking on the "Stroke" box located at the top of the "Swatches" palette and then select your color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place your text or object inside the box before you begin adding the border to help you decide what stroke will look best.
  • Instructions may vary some depending on which version of Adobe InDesign you are using.
  • Note that the Stroke box is the shape of an outline and not the filled in box shape, which will fill in the box rather than just coloring the border.
