A moustache handlebar contains inverted bends, turning back towards the rider like a moustache. They allow for a number of different hand positions, which permits better braking and hand control in certain situations. They are fairly popular among commuting cyclists and those who like to shift their hands easily.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Secure your bike to a repair stand or by clamping it to a solid anchor. You don't want the bike to move while you are installing the handlebar and need to keep it from wobbling or twisting while you work.

  2. Step 2

Pull the grips off of the ends of your old handlebar if you intend to use them on the moustache bar.

  3. Step 3

Unscrew the bolts on the brake levers and carefully remove them from the old handlebars. Set them aside somewhere where they will not cause undue stress on the brake lines.

  4. Step 4

Loosen the bolt which attaches the current handlebar to the stem and body of the bike with a wrench.

  5. Step 5

Slide the old handlebars out and replace them with the moustache handlebars. You may need to make sure that the clamp is extremely loose in order to move the twists and turns of the moustache bar through it or even remove the bolt entirely in order to fit it.

  6. Step 6

Adjust the moustache handlebars until they are in a comfortable position for you.

  7. Step 7

Tighten the clamp around the moustache bar, securing it to the bike frame. It should not wobble or twist once it is secured, but remain firmly in place.

  8. Step 8

Slide the brake levers to their desired position and tighten them back into place using the screwdriver.

  9. Step 9

Place the grips back on the moustache handlebars and make sure they are firmly in place. Alternately, you can replace them with handlebar tape, along with a cap to cover the ends of the bar.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that any moustache handlebar you purchase fits your bike before you try to install it. You should especially compare it with the grips on your old handlebars: you want to make sure you can place them on the moustache handlebars or else add new grips that will fit.
  • Depending on the size of your old handlebars, you may need to shorten the lines to your brakes when you install the moustache bars. Otherwise, the cables may be too long and could snag or otherwise interfere with the performance of the bicycle.
