With the explosion of self-publishing today we have more authors seeking promotion and marketing techniques. One way of promoting your self-published book is to hold a book signing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Call around or visit local bookstores, gift shops and libraries. Prepare a list of all possible venues and then contact each and explain to them what you are doing. Venues may be open to you book signing if the owners think it will draw more customers.
Step2
Make or order signs. Include on the poster the title of the book, the your name and a photo of the book cover and your own picture. Note on the poster any of your outstanding achievements. Don't forget to add the day, time and venue for the signing.
Step3
Arrive early enough to set up a table . Typically, authors sit behind a table to sign books. Check the seating arrangements in front of the table if you intend to read or speak.
Step4
Designate someone to keep the line moving. If there are many people waiting, someone must make sure the line does not come to a standstill because someone is becoming overly friendly with you.
Step5
Keep your cool. Smile and show curtesy. You are in the business of selling books and the customer is always right. No matter how much someone is attempting to engage you in a debate, be polite.
Step6
Accept offers to be photographed. Some people may ask to be photographed with you when you sign their book. Always accept the offers. The key is to keep the customers happy so they will buy more books.
Step7
After signing books, circulate and chit-chat with the audience. Consider giving a brief speech or a reading from your book. Always remember to thank the staff of the venue. Donate one of your books to the venue as a thank you.

on 4/26/2008 This is a 5 star how-to. I haven't finished a book yet, but hope the steps will come in handy in the future.
