Care for a Wig
Care for a Wig

A wig is an investment. It's important that you know how to care for it to maximize its longevity. Here's how to clean and care for your wig properly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush your wig lightly with a wire brush before washing. Never brush your wig with a standard hairbrush as it can be damaging to the fibers of your wig.

  2. Step 2

Add a teaspoonful of wig shampoo to a bowl of cool water. Never use hot water on a synthetic wig.

  3. Step 3

Use a shampoo designed specifically for synthetic wigs. Using a regular shampoo will shorten the life of your wig.

  4. Step 4

Treat your wig with care to prolong its life.. Remove your wig from the basin and gently squeeze excess water from your wig. Never twist or wring your wag to avoid damage.

  5. Step 5

Gently blot your wig dry with a soft towel. Never use rough or vigorous movements when drying your wig.

  6. Step 6

Place your wig back on its form to dry completely before styling. A wig should never be styled when wet.

  7. Step 7

A wig should be placed on its stand when not being worn. This will help to maintain its shape.

  8. Step 8

Place the wig into the water for one minute until it's saturated with the combination of shampoo and water. Douse it lightly in the basin for an additional minute.

  9. Step 9

You can periodically condition your wig by applying hair conditioner after washing and before the final rinse.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's generally recommended that synthetic wigs be washed after every 15-20 wearings. If you wash too frequently, your wig will have a shorter life.
  • Be sure to shampoo your natural hair often. If you keep your own hair clean underneath the wig, you can reduce the frequency with which your wig needs washing which may further help to preserve the life of your wig.
  • Take your wig in to be styled by a professional at regular intervals.
