Things You'll Need:

- Time

Step 1
Decide what kind of skiing you will be doing. Back-country skiing over deep snow requires wider skis, while for track skiing, skinny skis are ideal.
-
Step 2
In traditional Nordic skiing, you want skis that reach somewhere between the top of your head and your wrist when your arm is extended above your head. The exact length depends on what you plan to do with them. For track skiing, they can be as long as you feel comfortable having them; for back-country skiing, they should be a bit shorter.
-
Step 3
When you are deciding on a pair of cross-country skis you need to be able to test the flex and camber of the ski. For this, most Nordic skis shops will have a test board. Ask about this, as it will give you a chance to really see how the ski will function in the snow.
