You love your iPod and listen to it every day, it has your music, photos and other important data on it. If it were stolen, now there is a way to track it and recover your property via a free tracking software tool.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Install a program on your windows computer

Step1
Go to the web address below and download the iPod Tracker software.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=163798
Step2
Install the software and run the program.
Step3
This is how it works:
OK, here's how it works:

1. Thief steals your iPod (assuming you have one)
2. Wanting to add his/her own songs, he/she buys a connector cable
3. He/She plugs your iPod into his/her computer...

The Magic Begins...IF you have iTracker previously "installed" on your iPod and IF his/her computer is set to read "autorun.inf" files, it will automatically run "iTracker.exe" (a 42kB file), which will:

1. read your iPod's serial number
2. read the computer's name and username
3. connect to "iTracker.php" on your server which will read these pieces of information, make sure that it IS your iPod (by checking the serial number), and get the IP Address of the connection and time
4. "iTracker.php" will submit this information into the MySQL database, and if SMTP is enabled, it will E-Mail you all the information
5. Up to you to decide what you want to do with the information ;)

Notes: It does all of this silently and you CAN view all connection logs in a table, see "Read Me.txt" for more information.

Tips & Warnings

  • don't leave your iPod unattended such as in an unlocked locker or an unlocked car
  • If you have to leave your iPod in your car, then put it in your truck instead of leaving it laying on your car seat.

on 3/14/2008 What if the thief reformats the ipod once he gets it back to his criminal hide out in the mountains? Won't that also just erase the itracker program as well, thus rendering the ipod 'clean' and thereby untrackable? Or what if the evil mastermind behind the whole ipod ring doesn't have access to the internets (which Al Gore invented)? Or if he/she/it has a security program running at their criminal base station which alerts them when a program is about to be installed and/or access the internet via their evil server?

I'm not so sure about this itracker stuff.
