All students will have to write an argumentative paper at some point or another. An argumentative paper is one that argues for a particular side of a controversial issue. In order to be most effective, it's important that the paper has a strong thesis statement and strong support for the position. Once you know how to write an argumentative paper, you'll be able to write them with relative ease.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • computer or typewriter
  • research

Step1
Decide what your topic will be and which side of the issue you want to take. Write your thesis statement. Your thesis statement explains what the paper will be about. It should be very specific.
Step2
Research the issue. Make sure that you understand both sides of the issue. You should have at least three reasons that support your point of view and two reasons that support the opposing viewpoint.
Step3
Write the title of the paper. This should clearly explain what the paper will be about.
Step4
Write the introductory paragraph. This should introduce the reader to the topic. Explain what it is and how people feel about it. You may want to give a brief history of the issue.
Step5
Write a short paragraph that explains the side that you are going to take and briefly introduce your three (or more) reasons.
Step6
The next paragraphs should discuss one of your reasons. Take a few sentences to explain the reason and why it supports your viewpoint. Each of your three (or more) reasons should get its own paragraph.
Step7
The next two paragraphs should give the reasons for the opposing viewpoint. You should mention them and give a counter-argument for why they are not valid reasons.
Step8
Write the conclusion. The conclusion should restate your position and place the issue in a broader context.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your thesis can make or break the paper. Make sure that you write a strong thesis statement.
  • Some people find that outlining the paper helps to keep them organized.

on 1/13/2008 These are great tips, Space Girl. Many tend to be disorganized when building up this type of thing, thus often end up failing to get their message across the way they want to. Thanks ;)
