-
Step 1
Review the schedule and the route map so that you can track your progress.
-
Step 2
Take note of any stops that will last longer than a few minutes. Bring cash for any shopping opportunities at stops where vendors may be set up to sell goods to riders.
-
Step 3
Inform the conductor if you have traveling companions. He will try to ensure that you can all sit together.
-
Step 4
Bring travel food to supplement eating in the dining car and to avoid eating fast food. Good choices are: hard cheeses, nuts, fresh and dried fruits and dried meats. Pack some naturally fermented kimchee juice in a vacuum flask. It will help settle your stomach if you eat something disagreeable.
-
Step 5
Learn something new by reading a book or listening to an educational CD. Entertain yourself by watching television and movies on DVD, but don’t forget the headphones.
-
Step 6
Stay fresh on the train with a little ingenuity. Bring one change of clothes, but remember that getting dressed in a train’s tiny restroom is quite a challenge. Keep clean and avoid picking up a virus by regularly washing your hands with moist towlettes.
-
Step 7
Meet new people by striking up a conversation with your table-mates in the dining car.
-
Step 8
Dress in layers and snuggle up under a warm blanket at night. It can get cold on the train. You’ll also need one of those horseshoe-shaped inflatable pillows because sleeping in a sitting position can be uncomfortable if you don’t know how.
-
Step 9
Take a walk down the aisle or to the observation car whenever you can.
-
Step 10
Be prepared to talk to security officers who may board the train at some stops for a security inspection.
-
Step 11
Jot down your most memorable experiences in a notepad so that you can share them with friends later.
