Traveling cross-country on a train can be an exciting adventure or your worst nightmare. It can take days to travel from coast to coast. Knowing how to prepare and what to expect is the key to having a fun and memorable trip.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blanket
  • Travel food and kimchee juice
  • Cash
  • Books
  • CDs and DVDs
  • Extra batteries
  • Headphones
  • Train schedule
  • Route map
  • Hand cleaning towelettes
  • Inflatable pillow
  • Extra clothes
  • Adhesive bandages and aspirin
  • Notepad
  1. Step 1

Review the schedule and the route map so that you can track your progress.

  2. Step 2

Take note of any stops that will last longer than a few minutes. Bring cash for any shopping opportunities at stops where vendors may be set up to sell goods to riders.

  3. Step 3

Inform the conductor if you have traveling companions. He will try to ensure that you can all sit together.

  4. Step 4

Bring travel food to supplement eating in the dining car and to avoid eating fast food. Good choices are: hard cheeses, nuts, fresh and dried fruits and dried meats. Pack some naturally fermented kimchee juice in a vacuum flask. It will help settle your stomach if you eat something disagreeable.

  5. Step 5

Learn something new by reading a book or listening to an educational CD. Entertain yourself by watching television and movies on DVD, but don’t forget the headphones.

  6. Step 6

Stay fresh on the train with a little ingenuity. Bring one change of clothes, but remember that getting dressed in a train’s tiny restroom is quite a challenge. Keep clean and avoid picking up a virus by regularly washing your hands with moist towlettes.

  7. Step 7

Meet new people by striking up a conversation with your table-mates in the dining car.

  8. Step 8

Dress in layers and snuggle up under a warm blanket at night. It can get cold on the train. You’ll also need one of those horseshoe-shaped inflatable pillows because sleeping in a sitting position can be uncomfortable if you don’t know how.

  9. Step 9

Take a walk down the aisle or to the observation car whenever you can.

  10. Step 10

Be prepared to talk to security officers who may board the train at some stops for a security inspection.

  11. Step 11

Jot down your most memorable experiences in a notepad so that you can share them with friends later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep all your valuables (money, ID and purses) with you at all times.
  • When looking out the window, avoid visually tracking objects, like telephone poles, that are very close to the train. The constant refocusing required to do this may cause motion sickness.
