Most families can claim at least one moocher--that one member the rest of the family dreads seeing as the holidays roll around, or that user who never knows when he has enough and is sure to want some of what you have. But there are ways to keep that leech from begging and mooching off you. Try these suggestions and see if it helps to keep the family taker from sucking off you and your family.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Determination
Step1
If you have caller identification, screen your phone calls. Remember, just because the phone rings, it doesn’t mean you have to answer.
Step2
Be busy and stay busy when the moocher wants to visit. If she shows up unexpectedly you have two choices, either visit with her or tell her you are just leaving.
Step3
Be kind, civil and courteous. Be the same way you would be with any acquaintance who is a taker. Takers see anything more than common civility as an open door.
Step4
Don’t fall for the pity party all users play. They’re all down on their luck and can’t seem to make ends meet. Remember, they live this way because they want to.
Step5
Don’t get sucked into the “my poor kids” story around Christmas or birthdays. If you’re so inclined, buy one gift each, but no more. And don’t be surprised or upset when you find out the moocher’s kids had a wonderful Christmas with lots of presents.
Step6
There's no food in the house and I don't know what we're going to do! This is often one of their claims. Don’t feel guilty. By paying taxes you ensure there is more than enough help out there for those less fortunate, and for those who choose to be one of the less fortunate.
Step7
Remember the Chinese proverb that if you give a man a fish he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. These words are very wise, but remember you can only help those who want to be helped. If they are trying to improve their life then by all means help.
Step8
More words of wisdom to remember: beggars can’t be choosers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because they are family members, these moochers will use guilt to get from you what they can. Don't fall for it.
