The first email systems were used to send messages from one computer terminal to another on the same computer network. Messages were addressed to individuals on the network or to computer workstations on the network, such as terminal 22. For decades, computer users had to be at a certain computer to check their email accounts. Today, you can check your email from your normal computer or remotely access your SBCglobal (AT&T Yahoo!) email from any other computer connected to the Internet. All you need is your member identification and password.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the website giving you access to your mail server via your current web browser (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Type your SBCglobal member identification (the letters and/or numbers before the "@" sign in your email address) into the top white box.

  3. Step 3

Click the box after the "@" symbol to access the drop-down menu. Select "sbcglobal.net" by clicking it in the list.

  4. Step 4

Type in your password in the empty white box beside "Password."

  5. Step 5

Access the SBCglobal email account remotely by clicking the "Sign In" button next to the password box.

  6. Step 6

Click email messages to read them in your web browser. You can delete messages, create messages, forward messages and reply to messages just as you do with your normal email program. Simply click the buttons to perform the desired actions for your account.

  7. Step 7

Log out of your email account when you finish managing your email by clicking the "sign out" or "log out" button on the webpage for your account. If you don't sign out of your account, the next person using the computer may have access to your messages.

Tips & Warnings
  • Re-type your password and/or user name slowly to avoid typos if you have trouble remotely accessing your account the first time. If problems persist, make sure the "caps lock" isn't activated and the numbers lock is activated.
  • Be careful looking at attachments when viewing your email account remotely. The attachments will download to the computer you are using. Clear the cache of temporary Internet files when you are done using the computer.
  • Change your email password before you start using the account remotely, and then change the password again when you get back to your normal computer for greater security.
  • Make sure no is watching you input your private information when using your computer in a public place. If someone grabs your name and password, he can read all of your personal emails and send messages disguised as you.
