How to Set Up Earthlink Email in Outlook Express

Outlook Express gives people an all-in-one solution to access multiple email accounts, newsgroups and directory services. You can setup Outlook Express to check your Earthlink email account within a few minutes.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the Outlook Express program on the computer you will use to check your Earthlink email account.

  2. Step 2

    Find the "Tools" option in the menu list at the top of the Outlook Express window and click it.

  3. Step 3

    Look down the list of tools, and click on the "Accounts" option. If this is your first time using Outlook Express, a wizard screen should open automatically.

  4. Step 4

    Add the new Earthlink account by clicking the "Add" button, and then clicking "Mail."

  5. Step 5

    Type the name you want people to see when they receive email from you next to "Display name:" in the Internet Connection Wizard. You may choose a screen name (alias), your first name, a nickname or your full name for the box. Click the "Next" button or hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

  6. Step 6

    Type your full Earthlink email address (yourname@earthlink.net) in the white box, and click "Next."

  7. Step 7

    Select the "POP3" option by selecting it from the drop-down menu after the words "My incoming mail server is a."

  8. Step 8

    Add the words "pop.earthlink.net" in the next white box under "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server."

  9. Step 9

    Type "smtpauth.earthlink.net" in the white box under "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:," and then click the "Next" button.

  10. Step 10

    Type your full Earthlink email address again in the white box next to "Account name." Type your Earthlink email password in the other blank white box.

  11. Step 11

    Place a check mark in the box next to "Remember Password" to allow Outlook Express (and anyone using your computer) to check your email automatically. Otherwise, you will need to provide your password every time you check your Earthlink email.

  12. Step 12

    End the Internet Connection Wizard setup by clicking the "Next" button, and then the "Finish" button.

  13. Step 13

    Select the recently created account in the "Internet Accounts" window by clicking it.

  14. Step 14

    Display the properties for the new account by double clicking the Earthlink account.

  15. Step 15

    Select the "Servers" tab at the top of the window.

  16. Step 16

    Look at the bottom of the window for "My server requires authentication," and click the little white box to the left of the statement.

  17. Step 17

    Use the "Settings..." button to access the Outgoing Mail Server window. Click the white circle next to "Log on using." Type your full email address next to "Account name:" and your Earthlink email password next to "Password:" if the information isn't there already. Click the box next to "Remember password," and then click "OK."

  18. Step 18

    Access the server port numbers by clicking the "Advanced" tab at the top of the "Properties" window. Type "587" in the white box next to "Outgoing mail (SMTP)."

  19. Step 19

    Finish the setup process by clicking the "OK" button(s) to clear the screen of the pop-up window(s).

Tips & Warnings
  • Get updated Earthlink server information by providing your email address to the Support Center's server search function.
