Sambo, which is a martial arts discipline that originated in Russia, uses a slightly different dress code than other types of martial arts, such as judo or karate. During sambo practice and competition, one should wear the traditional uniform, or kurtka, shorts and wrestling shoes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kurtka, or uniform
  • Red and blue belts
  • Wrestling shoes, or sambofskis
  • Groin protector
  • Mouthpiece
  • Knee pads
  1. Step 1

Wear a red, white or blue kurtka when you dress for sambo. A kurtka is similar to a judo uniform, or gi, in that it is made from a heavy cloth that will resist tearing during the grappling and throwing moves that constitute sambo techniques. Purchase at least two kurtkas in different colors, so that you can always wear a different color kurtka than your opponent during competition.

  2. Step 2

Tie your kurtka with a traditional sambo belt, which must be either red or blue, depending upon the rest of your uniform. If you decide to use a traditional judo or karate belt, the ends must be taped down to your kurtka during competition.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a pair of wrestling shorts that match the color of your kurtka. Unlike many other martial arts, most sambo competitions allow participants to wear shorts, wrestling singlets or any type of strapless trunks.

  4. Step 4

Pick a pair of wrestling shoes or sambofskis, which will allow you to grip and gain leverage on the mat during a sambo competition. These lightweight shoes also differentiate sambo from other martial arts, in which wearing footwear on the mat can be considered disrespectful.

  5. Step 5

Use protective gear, such as groin protectors, mouthpieces and knee pads to prevent injury during sambo practice and competition. In many cases, you will not be allowed to compete unless you are wearing these accessories.

  6. Step 6

Check with your sambo instructor, or the owner of the martial arts training center, on the dress code standards for practice and competition. Many sambo classrooms offer a specific style of dress with distinctive logos or designs. Many martial arts centers may include the cost of the uniform in the enrollment package, so ask in advance before you enroll.

Tips & Warnings
  • The protective gear used in sambo is closer to amateur wrestling gear than it is to martial arts gear. Some training centers may allow you to wear traditional judo uniforms while practicing.
