How to Dress for Aikido

Aikido, a Japanese fighting technique that focuses on using balance and focus to defeat an opponent, emphasizes etiquette and dress code more than other martial arts. Whether you are participating in a dojo or practicing at home, maintain this discipline and dress in a way that is both functional and respectful.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gi
  • Obi
  • Pants
  1. Step 1

Purchase the uniform (gi) that is specified by your sensei (teacher). Many aikido dojos will supply a customized gi with the logo of the dojo printed on the back. The gi used for aikido is generally made of thicker, more durable material than those used in karate, since the grappling and throwing techniques can easily tear your uniform.

  2. Step 2

Choose loose-fitting and comfortable pants when you dress for aikido, preferably with a drawstring or elastic waistband. Your pants should be loose enough to allow free movement during kicking and throwing techniques but not so loose that your opponent may accidentally pull them off during a defensive maneuver.

  3. Step 3

Wear the required belt to designate your skill level in aikido. The belt should ride high enough on your waist to keep your gi closed, but it is not designed to secure your pants. Ask your sensei about the proper tying technique for your belt.

  4. Step 4

Remain barefoot while you practice aikido in your dojo or at home. Wearing shoes can injure an opponent if you step on his foot. In addition, wearing socks on the mat will make your footing less secure, and compromise your balance.

  5. Step 5

Avoid wearing jewelry when you dress for aikido practice. Take off any rings, watches, bracelets or necklaces before you step onto the mat. You can easily injure your opponent, as well as yourself, by wearing jewelry during aikido practice.

  6. Step 6

Keep your uniform in good condition. Keeping your gi clean, pressed and smelling good is a sign of respect for your sensei and your dojo. Replace your gi if any part of it becomes torn, frayed or stained.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove your shoes. It is considered extremely disrespectful to walk on the mat in an aikido dojo while you are wearing any type of footwear.
