Instructions

  1. Make a Three-Cornered George Washington Hat

    • 1

Cut each piece of construction paper down to a 3-inch by 12-inch rectangle.

    • 2

Lay one rectangle on top of another piece and staple one end with two or three staples.

    • 3

Open up the free ends of the papers and match the third rectangle to each end, forming a triangle.

    • 4

Staple the other ends of the triangle to finish the three-cornered hat.

Make a Mini Lincoln Log Cabin

    • 5

Cut off the bottom of the milk carton so that the remaining carton is about 5 or 6 inches tall.

    • 6

Glue the craft sticks to all four sides of the carton. You may need to cut the sticks down to fit on the front and back.

    • 7

Cut out a red construction paper rectangle to cover the roof of the log cabin.

    • 8

Glue the rectangle on to the slanted sides of the carton to form the roof.

    • 9

Cut out two windows and a door from the white construction paper.

    • 10

Draw a doorknob on the door and window panes on the windows with markers.

    • 11

Glue the door on to the craft sticks at the front of the house and glue one window on each side of the log cabin.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can substitute poster board for construction paper for a sturdier hat.

  • Let children draw a picture of George Washington or a flag on the sides of the hat before stapling the ends together.

  • You can substitute rolled-up paper, straws, or even cinnamon sticks for the craft stick logs on your cabin.

  • Tape a penny to the windows of the cabin with President Lincoln's image facing out.

  • To adapt this activity for very young children, make only the front façade of the cabin and glue it to a piece of construction paper.

  • Supervise young children carefully while they use scissors, stapler and glue to prevent injury.
