How to Convert a Midi File to Sheet Music for Free

You've heard a great ragtime piece in a midi file and you'd like to learn to play it yourself, but it's such a good midi file, it is difficult for your ear to pick up everything that's going on in it. For a long time, there was nothing you could do but fork out money to buy a full midi editor, even if you didn't want to edit at all, but only print the sheet music for the piece. Well, now there is an answer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Midi file you like

Step1
Download and install Notation Player, available online for free, and linked from the Resources section for this article.
Step2
View it. Use Notation Player to open the midi file you want to view. Then select the print view button rather than the window view button, otherwise it won't necessarily print to fit the page correctly when you go to print it.
Step3
Print it. Select File/Print. If you don't have a printer, you can print to a pdf file by installing CutePDF or PrimoPDF, either of which acts like a printer on your system that you can select from the print function of any software.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's great fun to hear a piece you like online and then be able to play it yourself.
  • Just so you know, the software will not print repeats as repeats. It will simply print any repeated section in the piece twice, as one long strung out piece.
  • For some unknown reason, this software does not print the title of the piece on the paper. If you want to keep track of all your sheet music, you will need to handwrite the title on each page you print out.
