Find new pen pals via online ads.

If you are in the mood to make a new friend, a creative way to do so is by finding a pen pal. In years past, the search for a pen pal often involved responding to ads in newspapers or magazines and waiting days or weeks to receive a reply, but the Internet makes it simpler than ever to connect with new pen pals. It is possible now to find, write to and hear back from a new pen pal all within the same day.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the type of person you would like to have as a pen pal. Think about the ideal gender, age and location of your new friend. You may even want to consider writing to a prisoner or a member of the military stationed overseas; these people are often lonely and will welcome correspondence.

    • 2

Visit an online pen pal database that allows potential pen pals to post profiles describing themselves and their interests. You can narrow down profiles based on the criteria you've decided on, which will weed out the people you are not interested in writing to and make it easier to find the perfect new friend.

    • 3

Select a person you would like to get to know and write him a letter or email. Introduce yourself and talk about subjects such as your hobbies, interests, work and family; keep the tone of the letter light and don't forget to ask sincere questions about your pen pal's interests as well.

    • 4

Respond promptly when you receive a letter from your pen pal. A new pen pal relationship can fade quickly if one of the parties involved doesn't keep up her end of the bargain.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you would rather have potential pen pals contact you, set up your own profile on a pen pal database.

  • If you are in the process of learning a foreign language, corresponding with a pen pal who speaks that language is an interesting way to practice your skills.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to write to a prisoner.

  • Do not give personal information to a person you don't know well. If you're exchanging paper letters with your pen pal, consider renting a PO box to avoid having to give out your home address.
