Raw beef dog food

If you’re concerned about the quality of store bought dog food, treat your dog to healthy homemade raw beef. Dogs are natural carnivores so a diet based on a healthy mix of protein and fat is best. It can take less than 30 minutes to make a one-week supply for a small dog. Your best friend will thank you for the extra effort with a shiny coat, a wet nose and a waggly tail.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 to 5 pounds of beef
  • 1 tablespoon of acidophilus per pound of beef
  • 1 quarter cup of oat bran per pound of beef
  • 1 bottle of supplement tablets for dogs
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Food processor or meat grinder
  • Plastic storage bags
  1. Step 1

Buy the less expensive cuts of beef for your dog and save the fillet mignon for yourself. See the “Tips” and “Cautions” sections below for guidance.

  2. Step 2

Wash the meat off with cold water and pat dry with a paper towel.

  3. Step 3

Cut the meat into chunks of about 2 to 3 inches square.

  4. Step 4

Divide the meat into separate piles weighing approximately one pound each.

  5. Step 5

Use a food processor as a grinder. It allows you to combine all the ingredients at the same time. This makes the processor the fastest option. The size and sturdiness of your processor will determine how much meat you put in at one time. A meat grinder works well for grinding the meat, but you will have to mix in the other ingredients by hand.

  6. Step 6

Add acidophilus and oat bran to each pound of meat in the processor.

  7. Step 7

Read the instructions for the dog supplements and add the correct amount to the mix. For example, if you’re making enough food for a week’s worth of meals, add a week’s worth of supplements to the total amount of meat.

  8. Step 8

Separate the food into plastic storage bags for convenience. Once you’ve made raw beef dog food a few times, the process flows more smoothly and goes even faster.

Tips & Warnings
  • Chuck roast is a good cut of beef to work with.
  • Introduce any new food to your dog in small amounts at first.
  • Dogs don’t require as much taste variety in the food they eat the way humans do, so don’t worry about Fido getting bored. If it tastes good, he will love it.
  • Make more than you need for a week and store the extra food in the freezer.
  • Don’t feed your dog raw hamburger, as the potential for coming down with a food borne illness is not worth the risk.
