How to Recognize Greek Revival Architecture

There are many features that will help you to recognize Greek Revival architecture. You'll find beautiful homes and buildings constructed in this style in small towns and cities spread throughout the United States and the rest of the globe. Most Greek Revival architecture buildings are symmetrical and were built in the 1800s.

      Note the color and look at the supports. Most Greek Revival structures are white. Corinthian, Doric and Ionic are the three types of supporting columns in Greek Revival Architecture. If a house does not have columns, it may still be a Greek Revival structure. In place of the supporting columns, some homes have pilasters, which resemble flat columns that protrude slightly from the house.

      Look for a portico that has large, prominent supporting columns. The portico can be either full width or entry size.

      Check if the building has a hipped or gabled roof that is low in pitch. A pediment is the triangular gable at the front of the building.

      Note if the windows and doors in the building seem large in relation to the rest of the structure. The window sashes in Greek Revival architecture usually have six-pane glazing.

      Examine the front of the structure for narrow windows surrounding the door.

      Examine the main roof and porch roofs of the building and look for a cornice set off by a wide trim.
