Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Try to save your work. Often, once you get the scratch disk message you are in trouble, but try hitting ctrl-s or cmd-s anyway. It's worth a shot.
Step2
Close Photoshop, and any other programs you may have open.
Step3
Defrag your hard drive. Usually this will solve the problem, and defragging is good routine maintenance anyway. If you do not know how to defrag your hard drive, check out the resources provided at the bottom of this article for both PC and Mac
Step4
Restart your computer once all defragging is complete. Usually this will fix the problem, and you scratch disk error message will be a dim memory.

Tips & Warnings

  • If problems persist, you might have to make some tech savvy adjustments to your hard drive partition. Enlist the help of someone with experience to make a change of that magnitude.
  • Get into the habit of routinely defragging your hard drive. I do this roughly once a month.
