You should always have the latest available updates installed on your system for Microsoft Word. When you do this, your Word program will have the newest possible features and options available (including security). The update will only take a few minutes, but will give your software more security and reliability. You can get Microsoft Word updates for the following versions of the program: Microsoft Word 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Open the website Microsoft Office Online (see Resources below).
Step2
Select the “Downloads” tab.
Step3
Click on the “Check for Microsoft Updates” button.
Step4
The Microsoft Update page will open. You will have the option of “Express” and “Custom” installations.
Step5
Select “Express” if you want all of the updates that are high-priority. If you would like to see all possible updates, choose “Custom." It is suggested that you choose “Express.”
Step6
Wait as a scan is performed on your computer for any Microsoft software updates. This process varies in time from several seconds to many minutes. If you have recently completed an update, the scan will be quicker than if you have not. Your Internet connection also affects the time needed.
Step7
Install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool to continue, if necessary. If so, choose “Download and Install Now.” A window showing the download and install process will appear. This should not take much time. After this is finished choose “Close.” Then select “Continue” to move on.
Step8
Assess your download needs. A page with all high-priority updates your system needs will be shown. You can also see the size and estimated download time of them.
Step9
Click on “Install Updates.” The updates being downloaded and then installed will be seen in a pop-up window.
Step10
Restart your system once the update is complete for it to become effective. Choose “Restart Now” to finish updating, or choose “Close” to finish the update. Make sure you restart your system at a later time.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may be required to install an ActiveX Control during the update process. It is a simple procedure and you will be given directions on how to complete it.
  • When you update Microsoft Word, you will also find updates for any other Microsoft software you have on your computer.
  • If you get warnings about “pop-ups”, you may have to suspend your blocker until the update for Microsoft Word is completed.
