If you have Microsoft Publisher on your computer, it is advised that you keep it regularly updated. This is a simple process that can be completed easily. Once you have updated Microsoft Publisher, you will have all of the latest available options, security improvements and other features. This will give you the best overall performance from your publishing software. You can get Microsoft Publisher updates for the following versions: Microsoft Publisher 2000 Microsoft Publisher 2002 Microsoft Publisher 2003 Microsoft Publisher 2007

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Microsoft Publisher Installed
  • Internet Connection
  • Microsoft Publisher Install CD(s)

Step1
Go online to Microsoft Office Online – See Resources for link to this site.
Step2
Click on the “Downloads” tab that you will find on the page.
Step3
Locate the button marked: “Check for Microsoft Updates” and then click on it.
Step4
You will be taken to a webpage entitled: “Microsoft Update”, which has two buttons to select from. The two buttons are “Express” and “Custom”.
Step5
Select “Express”. This will give you all of the updates that are high-priority. These are the updates that you must definitely install on your system. If you want to select from all available updates, choose “custom” – this is not suggested, unless you want to view and select from other optional updates.
Step6
Your system will be scanned for all available Microsoft product updates. This may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. It will depend on the last time you did an update and what type of a connection you have to the Internet. The more often you do the updates, the faster this process will be.
Step7
Before you able to proceed, you may be required to install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool. In this situation, select “Download and Install Now”. You will see a window displaying the download and install process. This should not take very long. Once it is complete select “Close”. Select “Continue” to proceed. You will only have to do this step the first time (if at all) you go to the update webpage.
Step8
You will then see a webpage displaying all available updates for your system. This could range from only one to several of them. All of the high-priority updates will be selected automatically. It will also show how big the download(s) is and how long it should take to download.
Step9
Click “Install Updates” You will see a window appearing on your screen showing the updates being downloaded and then it will show them being installed. Again, the time will vary depending on how many are downloading and what your Internet connection is.
Step10
When the update is finished you will have to restart your computer for them to become effective. Select “Restart Now” to complete the update, or select “Close”. If you select Close, you will have to restart your system at some time to finish the update.

Tips & Warnings

  • The first time you do an update, you could be required to install Office Update Installation Engine (or other ActiveX Control). Follow the directions provided to complete this installation easily. Once you do this, you will not be required to do it again in the future.
  • When you use Microsoft Update for updating Microsoft Publisher, you will also be able to update any (all) of your Microsoft products at the same time. This is a nice time saver, since all of the products can be taken care of at one time.
  • If you have any type of a “popup” blocker on your computer, you may have to disable it (or allow popups) to complete your Microsoft Publisher update. Enable it as soon as you have finished. You may also have to permit access, if you have a firewall on your system.
