From Quick Guide: Filing Your Taxes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the status of your e-filed return through your computer software if you used a tax return software such as turbo tax to file. Most of the tax software available on the market has a section for checking your return status. If you need help, contact the manufacturer of the software for instructions or read the Help and Frequently Asked Questions portion of the software.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Internal Revenue Service website to determine the status of your e-filed return. Click on the tab that says "Get Refund Status."

  3. Step 3

Fill out the form on the website (see Resources below). You will need to provide your social security number, the filing status shown on your tax return, and the amount of your refund. Submit the information for instant access to the status of your refund.

  4. Step 4

Call the IRS automated hotline at (800) 829-1954 for information on your e-file. This automated system will require you provide the same information that you would also have to provide at the website. After entering the information on your telephone key pad, the system will provide a date you can expect to receive your refund.

  5. Step 5

Speak to a live IRS representative by calling (800) 780-9247 if you are having trouble getting the status of your e-filed tax return using the methods above.
