Serve a Meal From the Left

Present a tray of food to the left of the diner when either the waiter must serve the diner from the tray or when the diner serves himself.

Hold the tray away from the diner so that when the waiter leans forward, the waiter does not crowd the diner.

Place side dishes on the table from the left, as that will allow the main dishes to have the main focus. Serve bread and rolls from the left for the same reason.

Clear the table from the left. Since most diners are right-handed, this allows the waiter to be less conspicuous.
Serve a Meal From the Right

Place pre-plated food in front of the diner from the right.

Clear the pre-plated food from the right when the diner is finished with the meal.

Serve wine and other beverages from the diner's right side. This makes it easier for the waiter, as the glasses are arranged on the diner's right side.
