Many of these toys are played with enthusiastically in the beginning but then quickly became discarded after the novelty wears off. Children often find the boxes toys come in just as much fun as the toy itself. So why not run with this. Make toys from your trash. You and your kids will have fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Create cars, houses and airplanes out of large cardboard boxes. You can cut out holes for doors and windows and let your children use crayons and markers to decorate the box. This is a great opportunity to develop pretend play skills with your children.

    • 2

Make a puzzle. Have your child draw a picture on a piece of cardboard. Then flip the picture over and draw off sections of the cardboard into shapes. Use an utility knife to cut out shapes.

    • 3

Use your egg cartons to make toys from trash. Cut apart the cups and make different animals. Use crayons and markers to create details on the cups, and add pipe cleaners to make tails, ears or antennas.

    • 4

Wrap tape tightly around two toilet paper tubes and make your own binoculars. Draw a map of your yard or house for a treasure hunt so your kids can use their binoculars to locate their treasure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be creative. The above ideas are only a beginning. Look into your recycling bin and see what you and your kids can come up.

  • You can store your trash for toys in a box in the garage or basement, or if you have a recycling bin, simply look through it before it goes out to the curb.

  • Make sure your kids take part in the creation process when you are making toys from trash. This should not be just another task for your "to-do" list, rather it should be an activity that your family can do together.
