A traditional fishtail skirt is a long, ankle-length skirt that is tightly fitted from the waist to the knee and then flares out to create a fishtail look. Some new designs of the fishtail skirt have a pleated area between the legs and crotch that allows the wearer more leg room to walk. Fishtail skirts are often worn for nicer occasions like weddings or proms.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy the correct size. This step is crucial to the overall look of the skirt. The waist needs to be tight-fitting. The length needs to be proportional to your height. Fit the dress to your hips as well. Try the skirt on before purchasing it to be sure it is comfortable and fits correctly.

  2. Step 2

Place the top of the skirt in the appropriate area. Some fishtail skirts are made to sit below the waist on the hips while others fit directly on the waist.

  3. Step 3

Look in the mirror to see if the tail or flare of the dress begins at the knee. If the skirt is worn properly, the wearer has a look similar to a mermaid.

  4. Step 4

Wear the appropriate shoes for the dress. Many fishtail skirts are made for women with longer legs. If you have shorter legs, wear heels so the skirt is the correct length. Some hemming may be required. Practice walking in the fishtail skirt with your heels to get a feel for the tight-fitting skirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fishtail skirts are made in all types kinds of fabrics. It is even possible to find a maternity fishtail skirt. The maternity fishtail skirt fits under the belly and is usually made of a stretchy material such as cotton rayon.
