How to Do the Country Dance Waltz

The country waltz is almost as elegant as the ballroom waltz and is also one of the easiest dances to learn. It can be danced as a line dance or with a partner. Follow these steps and you'll soon be scootin' your boots to the country waltz.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Step forward with the left foot on the first beat. On the second beat, place your right foot beside the left and tap your left foot in place on the third beat.

  2. Step 2

    Slide the right foot back on the fourth beat and place your left foot back beside the right on the fifth, then tap the right foot to the sixth beat.

  3. Step 3

    Move your left foot across and in front of the right on the seventh beat, then step to the right with the right foot on the eighth, tap the left foot on the ninth.

  4. Step 4

    Reverse the motions of Step 3 on the tenth beat, sweeping your right foot across the left, then stepping alongside it with the left on the eleventh. Tap the right foot on the twelfth beat.

  5. Step 5

    Turn a quarter turn to the left while sliding the left foot forward on the thirteenth beat, step forward with your right foot on the fourteenth, then place the left foot over beside the right on the fifteenth beat.

  6. Step 6

    Place your right foot back on the sixteenth beat, step the left foot beside the right on the seventeenth, then tap your right foot on the eighteenth.

  7. Step 7

    Do a waltz box by stepping forward with the left foot on the nineteenth beat, slide your right foot forward and to the right on the twentieth, then close the left foot beside the right on the twenty-first.

  8. Step 8

    Complete the box by stepping back with the right foot on the twenty-second beat, slide your left foot back and to the left on the twenty-third beat and close the right foot to the left on the twenty-fourth and final beat.

  9. Step 9

    Start over and do the country dance steps again.

Tips & Warnings
  • When dancing as a couple, one partner does the same moves only in reverse. When the leading partner steps forward with the left foot, the other partner will step back with their right and so on.
