Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Research your state laws regarding registration. These laws vary by state. Business registration is handled through the Secretary of State office. There may also be additional licenses needed by the county or the city depending on your business.
Step2
Fill out the forms. There will be forms that need to be filled out. These forms can often be obtained on your local Secretary of State website. Print the forms off the website and fill them out completely. This information will include contact information, business name, EIN (Employee Identification Number) which is required whether you have employees or not, and other information. Make sure to read form instructions carefully and provide complete information.
Step3
Pay the fee. This varies by state and can be sent in by check, money order or accompanying credit card form to the Secretary of State office. You will receive a receipt, but it is recommended you make a copy of the form and method of payment before sending in for your records.
Step4
Wait for a response from the Secretary of State office. Usually this takes 30 to 60 days, however if there are problems with the application, payment or business information provided, it could take longer. You will be contacted for corrections in the event of this extended time frame.
