We often complain about the lack of quality service in many industries today. That being said, when we receive excellent service that meets or exceeds our expectations we should encourage it. In many service industries, we reward good service by tipping. Spa visits are no exception. How much to tip depends on a couple of variables. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

According to a CNN/Money report, the typical spa services tip is 15 to 20 percent. However, if the services are provided by the spa owner, no tip is required. It is generally understood that you will offer one tip for all services you've received, which would be split among the consultants that provided each service. If you would be more comfortable tipping each one separately, feel free to do so; but the general tip per person would be 15 to 20 percent of the total spa visit.

  2. Step 2

Many lodges, retreats, and hotels offer spa services. Ask an attendant if gratuity is included in the costs. If not, ask if tipping is preferred individually or for the whole package. Usually, they will give you the freedom to make that choice but it is always a good idea to ask in case they do have gratuities included.

  3. Step 3

If service is not as professional as you would prefer, any gratuity should be at the bottom of the range. In the case of spa services that would be 15 percent. Also leave a note or speak with an attendant about any problems you had. This feedback is how they measure improvements in their services, so if you are courteous they are typically appreciative.

  4. Step 4

While there are customary tipping standards for most service-related industries, paying above the standard is a wonderful way to send a thank you to your service provider. And for those services that you use on a regular basis, a "bonus" tip during the holidays is always both proper etiquette and appreciated!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always make sure your bill does not include a pre-determined gratuity before tipping, unless, of course, you intend to leave extra for excellent service.
