It's getting colder outside and you can feel a cold breeze blowing through your windows, I will show you how easily you can stop window drafts by installing an indoor window plastic kit. This help create savings in home heating cost.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Inside window plastic kits available at most hardware stores
  • Hair dryer
  • Scissors
Step1
The venetian blinds will need to be removed next Decide how many window kits you will need. Remove window valances and Venetian blinds to allow easy access to the window trim.
Step2
Remove window valances and Venetian blinds to allow easy access to the window trim.
Step3
The surface will need to be clean to get the double stick tape to adhere properly. Clean the windows, the glass, the outside window frame, make sure the storm windows are shut and latched properly. Clean out the dust, dirt and spider webs.
Step4
Apply double stick tape all the way around the window trim boards, the tape will need to overlap to get a really good seal.
Step5
Remove the paper backing from the double stick tape, making sure it is stuck really good before pulling it off.
Step6
Using the scissors, cut a piece of plastic large enough to cover your window with about 3-4 inches extra around the sides and top. Holding the plastic with both hands stick it to the top and stretch it out evenly and gently press top bottom and then the sides.
Step7
Going around each side pull the slack out of the plastic and re-stick it down by pressing the tape with your fingers.
Step8
Using a hair dryer, warm up the double stick tape and press the plastic down once again, this may be necessary if it is cold and you are having trouble getting it to stick.
Step9
The plastic will be warm or hot when you press it down so be careful and wear gloves if needed.
Step10
Now that you are sure that the plastic is stuck down good, use the hair dryer and blow hot air onto the center of the plastic sheet. This causes it to pull tight and take all the wrinkles out.
Step11
Using your scissors, trim off the extra plastic outside the tape leaving 1/4 to 3/8 inch remaining. Less is better especially if small fingers can get a-hold of it.
Step12
This is what your finished window will look like.
Step13
Install the blinds and curtains, and whatever else you removed when you started this project.
Step14
Lower the blinds and place the furniture back where it was and you are done. Move to the next window and repeat this process. I did 6 windows in about 1 1/2 hrs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding the plastic on a warm day makes it much easier to get the double stick tape to work properly
  • Keep an eye on your scissors as little ones may run off with them
  • Plastic can suffocate a baby or child, keep this up as well
  • Blind cords are a strangulation risk for children and babies, tie them up or cut them off.
