If you’ve been to a circus, you’ve probably seen those agile trick riders as they jump and flip on horseback. You may be surprised to learn there is an actual sport dedicated to gymnastics on horses. With origins traced back to ancient Rome, this sport is seeing increased popularity among young riders. If you are interested in learning equestrian vaulting, here are some tips to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a club near you. Check with local Pony Clubs to see if they offer vaulting. Alternately, the AVA (American Vaulting Association) provides a free search engine on its site to look for a club by region. (See Resources)

  2. Step 2

Attend a vaulting clinic. Designed to provide instruction, technique and knowledge of the sport, these clinics are a good way to see what vaulting is all about. You will meet current competitors, trainers, learn from the pros and get a chance to interact with others involved in the sport. (See Resources)

  3. Step 3

Take gymnastics lessons. Before you can perform a back flip on horseback, you need to be able to do it safely on the ground. A gymnastics class can help you hone your stunts.

  4. Step 4

Familiarize yourself with horses in general. Being comfortable around them is a requirement of vaulting. If you own a horse, spend time every day riding and grooming him.

  5. Step 5

Consider starting a club in your community if you can’t find one close enough to join. The AVA provides information and educational materials to new clubs. Order their complete “Camps and Clubs Manual” when you’ve generated enough interest to make your dream a reality. (See Resources).

  6. Step 6

Order videos, DVD’s and instructional books from the AVA website. (See Resources).

Tips & Warnings
  • Equestrian vaulting is a dangerous sport and should only be practiced with a professional instructor. Never try vaulting stunts at home.
