Once, knitting was a fairly cheap hobby. Knitting needles were relatively inexpensive and yarn could be purchased for very little. Those days seem to be gone now, with yarn going for five dollars or more a skein. It’s no longer inexpensive to make knitted items for yourself or for gifts.

From Quick Guide: Learning to Knit
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet Connection
  • An eBay account (optional)
  1. Step 1

Check local thrift shops for knitting needles and yarn. Often you can pick up boxes of needles and yarn for a dollar or less.

  2. Step 2

Do an Internet search on "knitting needles." There are a number of web sites online that sell needles and yarn. Look at their closeouts for the best bargains.

  3. Step 3

Check out closeout stores such as Big Lots. Occasionally you can find yarn for dollars less than retail.

  4. Step 4

Check eBay for knitting needle lots. Yarn lots are also available. Pay attention to the shipping costs as they can raise the price of the needles or the yarn to almost retail prices.

Tips & Warnings
  • When purchasing yarn for a project, attempt to make sure that all skeins came from the same lot number. This assures uniform color and density.
  • Ask friends and relatives if they have any knitting supplies they no longer use. Knitting is a hobby that often falls by the wayside as prices rise.
  • If you ever attend country auctions, many times, boxes of craft supplies can be bid on and won for a song. Auction listings can be found in your local newspaper.
  • Make sure to store your knitting needles in such a way that they will not get bent or otherwise damaged. The cardboard center of a paper towel rod does a terrific job for storing straight needles.
