How to Write a Non-Fiction Book Review

  1. Step 1

The goal of the non-fiction book review is to provide a detailed synopsis of what is presented in the book without giving away all of the key points.

  2. Step 2

Read the book in as much detail as possible in order to know if the stated goal or claims of the book have been presented.

  3. Step 3

Provide the particulars of the book including the overall concept and whether the book presents these concepts in a formal or informal manner.

  4. Step 4

Talk about the style of writing in your review. Does the book give detailed background on the topic, present the information in a series of tips, provide case studies or use some other format to present the material?

  5. Step 5

Tell what areas of the topic are covered and what areas are left out. Is the information clear with enough detail for the reader to learn something new about the topic or is it so general that it adds little new value to the topic?

  6. Step 6

Provide a synopsis of any additional materials such as the appendix and whether an index, bibliography section or other extra information are included.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attempt to be positive in your overall assessment without being untruthful to your opinion.
  • Focus on the good parts of the book while mentioning some areas that were weak in your opinion.
  • Be as impartial and objective as possible in your review.
  • If you really don’t like a book, skip doing the review instead of submitting a harsh or severely negative review.
  • Only write a review for books that you take the time to read for yourself.

on 5/1/2009 I would like to know how to write an online book review where I get paid by Amazon if someone actually buys the book I recommended. The problem is I don't know how to write a review without quoting the author extensively. I find that I cannot rephrase it any better than how the author expressed it. What are your suggestions?
