How to Build a Butler's Pantry

Even if you don't have a butler, you can have a butler's pantry. Butler's pantries were originally built for servants to keep the food preparation area separate from the kitchen and guests. An updated butler's pantry is very helpful if you entertain a lot and isn't difficult to build.

Instructions

1. Locate the butler's pantry adjacent to the kitchen. The butler's pantry should be close to the kitchen but a separate area. The butler's pantry should have a door leading to the kitchen for easy access of extra supplies. If you don't have an extra area that's separate from the kitchen, a butler's pantry can be incorporated into your existing kitchen, in an area that's set aside from the main work area.

2. Design the butler's pantry for your own particular needs. Most butler pantries incorporate a small sink, or bar sink for easier clean-up. A stemware rack will keep wine glasses safe and within reach and can be installed above the sink. A small under the counter refrigerator will keep drinks or hors d'ouevres cold while keeping the main refrigerator free for main course dishes. An extra dishwasher, if you have the space, will make your prep work so much easier.

3. Add extra cabinet space for serving bowls and trays that are too bulky for your regular kitchen cabinets. The extra cabinets can store those serving pieces that are used only for parties. Keep a section of the cabinet to use for extra food items to be served. Install at least one cabinet with drawers for linen storage.

4. Install enough counter top space for an adequate work area. The counter top can cover the dishwasher and mini fridge, which should give you adequate counter space for food prep. Choose a luxurious counter top to accent your favorite serving pieces if possible.
