How to Remove Information From Google Search Results

Often a Google search yields far more results than you can possibly go through. While this abundance of information is not always bad, it can make it difficult to find the one little nugget of information you're searching for. Fortunately, Google allows you to use several tactics to remove unwanted information from your Google search results and narrow your focus to the results you really want. Read on to more.

1. Use quotes when entering search terms. Normally when you enter search terms into Google, the search engine searches for all the words you enter and provides any website which contains one of those words. However, when you place quotes around words, Google only provides search results which have all the words you entered in between the quotes and in the order you entered them.

2. Add the minus sign to remove some search results. A minus sign in a Google search has the opposite effect of quotes. When you place a minus sign next to any search term, Google will not display any website which contains the term. For example, if you want information on former United States Senator Prescott Bush instead his more famous relatives, Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush enter "Prescott Bush-George."

3. Perform advanced Google searches. Advanced searches take more time and are more complicated but can yield results more tailored to what you're looking for. Next to the Google search box, click on "Advanced Search." Enter the term you want to find and then in the "Without the Words" field, enter the results you want removed.

4. Omit other results in the "Next" section of Google's advanced search. In the "Next" section, you can omit websites based on the date they were published, their language and their region of origin.

5. Change your Google preferences. Click on "Preferences" next to the Google search results field to enter some search preferences. Here you can instruct Google to not return search results in certain languages and omit potentially offensive content. Google remembers your preferences and uses them when returning search results until you change them.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use search terms in quotes in combination with search terms outside of quotes. You can provide normal search results outside of quotes, but then narrow your results by entering a word or a few words inside quotes.
• Try different word combinations in quotes if your search does not yield any results. The exact phrase you entered into Google may not be found on any websites, but a similar phrase may produce results.
