Step 1
Choose non-see-through clothing. Mesh or transparent shirts or bathing suit cover-ups will not prevent you from some sun exposure. If you're prone to sun burning, you may actually get sunburn through these thin clothes. Hold your clothes about 6 inches away from your face and face a light source. If you can see light through the clothing, it may be not tightly woven enough to prevent sunburn.
-
Step 2
Watch for gaps in the clothing. If your skin is not covered, at all times, from the sun, it is possible to get a sunburn through a lacy detail or through wide button holes.
-
Step 3
Remember that shirts with collars and long sleeves and long pants will help prevent sunburn easier than t-shirts and tank tops will.
-
Step 4
Pick clothing that covers up easily sunburned and often forgotten portions of your body such as the back and sides of the neck and the ankles--especially if you're lying out.
-
Step 5
Wear a hat to protect the face and neck from sunburn. A wide-brimmed hat can be chic and protect your face and neck from sunburn at the same time.
-
Step 6
Avoid wearing wet garments. Wet garments actually don't protect from the sun as well as dry garments do.
