Street basketball is usually played on playgrounds and in gymnasiums in pickup games and organized street basketball programs and tournaments. The rules are much the same as regular basketball with a few exceptions.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Separate the group into 2 equal teams with each team supporting 3 players.

  2. Step 2

Toss a coin to determine which team will have the ball at the start of the game.

  3. Step 3

Use a half court with 1 hoop for street basketball. The court will need to be marked with the base and sidelines, the 3-point arc and a free-throw line.

  4. Step 4

Play the game as you normally would, shooting at the same hoop for each team.

  5. Step 5

Pass the ball to defense who then gets possession of the ball after offense has made a basket.

  6. Step 6

Clear the ball behind the 3-point arc before attempting to make a basket if you are on defense after a steal or defensive rebound.

  7. Step 7

Win the game if you are the first team to get 15 points, or after 20 minutes of play your team has scored the most points. If the score is tied after 20 minutes, the next score after time has been called determines the winning team.

Tips & Warnings
  • Point values aren't the same in street basketball as they are regular basket ball. Regular baskets are worth 1 point and baskets from behind the 3-point line are worth 2 points. If you want to play more like the pros, regular baskets can be worth 2 points, 3-pointers will earn your team 3 points.
  • Because there is no referee in street basketball, the player who has been fouled calls foul. The fouled teams takes or retains possession of the ball.
  • If the game is mostly comprised of men, a team with women will get 2 extra points for each woman in the game. Each team may not get any more than 5 extra points.
  • Each team may have 1 30-second time out per game.
  • The 3-second rule is not used in street basketball.
