How to Buy Phthalate-Free Products

Phthalates are a group of chemicals primarily used in plastics to increase their flexibility. Their use is controversial because phthalates have caused hormonal activity in rodents when administered in high doses, although some believe these concerns are overstated. However, you can buy phthalate-free products if you are wary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Use caution when buying sex toys. These are the one group of products that should be avoided until the controversy regarding phthalates has been resolved. Sex toys made of "jelly rubber" should not be used unless you can verify they are phthalate-free.
Step2
Look for a "phthalate-free" label. Notices specifically identifying a product as not containing phthalates are becoming more popular and this has become a major selling point, especially on nail polish and sex toys.
Step3
Find the term "phthalate" in the list of ingredients. These will almost certain be phthalate esters.
Step4
Learn the specific names and abbreviations of the most widely used phthalate esters. These include di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP.)
Step5
Know which products are likely to contain phthalates but do not carry a list of ingredients. Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) is primarily used in piping and comprises the largest single use of phthalates, especially DEHP. Foamed PVC is usually found in flooring and contains benzylbutylphthalate (BBzP). Other common uses of phthalates include adhesives, caulk, fishing lures, paint, perfumes and pesticides.
