No matter the weather, you can make a wood scrap snowman decoration for your mantle or the front yard. Create these adorable snowmen in different sizes out of various wood scraps, planks and boards. One snow wood scrap snowman is cute, but an entire snowman family decorating your front yard is even cuter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wood scraps
  • Sandpaper
  • Acrylic paint in white and colors of your choice
  • Material scraps
  • Yarn or ribbon
  • Buttons
  • White craft glue
  • Assorted size paintbrushes
  • Dry rag

Step1
Decide on the size of your snowman. A board that is 36 inches long and 6 inches wide will make a nice large snowman, and a wood scrap that is 6 inches tall and 2 inches wide makes a small snowman for a shelf or mantle.
Step2
Sand any rough areas of wood that may cause splinters.
Step3
Paint the entire piece of wood with white acrylic paint. Apply a second coat of paint if desired.
Step4
Decorate the snowman's face using buttons or coal for the eyes, painted pasta or yarn for the mouth and a fake carrot for the nose. You could also paint a face on your wood scrap snowman.
Step5
Glue twigs on the wood for his arms.
Step6
Paint on clothes or dress up your snowman in real clothes.
Step7
Add a hat and a scarf to your snowman and set him on a shelf or stick the bottom of the board into the ground if the snowman is going to be outside. Yarn or ribbon make good scarves for small snowmen. Cut off the foot of a sock and fringe the ankle end to make a snowman's hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are going to put your snowman outside, add about 8 to 10 inches to the length of your board, to secure him in the ground.
  • For frozen ground, build a stand for your snowman, using either extra strength glue or a hammer, nails and a base plank. The plank should be 8 to 10 inches long and 5 to 6 six inches wide. Nail or glue your snowman onto the base plank.
  • Paint the base black and then paint your snowman's name in white or a bright color. Paint your base before nailing your snowman in place.
