An itchy scalp is an annoying problem that can affect just about anyone. It can be a sign of various conditions and often leads to embarrassing dandruff or more serious problems. Some people choose to seek medical advice to treat itchy scalp, while others prefer to stick with over-the-counter remedies or all-natural home remedies. You may need to try a few OTC and home remedies before you find one that works for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop an itchy scalp by treating the cause. Itchy scalp can be a symptom of a variety of common ailments, most likely dandruff. Treat your dandruff and you'll stop that itchy, annoying scalp.

  2. Step 2

Pick up an anti-dandruff shampoo from your local store. Anti-dandruff shampoos that contain ketoconazole are considered highly effective, and you'll want to use one about twice per week. This quick and inexpensive home treatment is usually enough to stop an itchy scalp in its tracks.

  3. Step 3

Try various home remedies to stop itchy scalp without using chemicals. Natural treatments can be quite effective and are good choices for parents who don't want to use chemicals on their children's scalps.

  4. Step 4

Apply essential oils to your scalp or your child's scalp to reduce itching and irritation. Essential oils like thyme and rosemary, when diluted, have strong natural anti-itch properties.

  5. Step 5

Use shea butter or coconut oil (virgin and unrefined) to reduce itching of the scalp. These are wonderful moisturizers that will not only reduce itching but will also protect your hair against brittleness and will give it a nice, healthy shine.

  6. Step 6

Inspect your child's head for signs of ringworm. Ringworm is actually a fungal infection that can strike just about any part of the body. Ringworm of the scalp is called tinea capitis and is recognized by a ring pattern of redness that starts at the base of a hair and radiates outward. Ringworm causes extreme irritation and can lead to cracking and bleeding skin on the scalp. Ringworm treatments can be found at any pharmacy.

  7. Step 7

Leave your hat at home. The skin of your scalp will benefit from a little sunlight.

  8. Step 8

Stop using hair products. Using hair products can impact the pH balance of your hair and scalp and will contribute to itching and dandruff. Keep these harsh chemicals out of your hair and choose an all-natural alternative--or go without.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow the directions on your anti-dandruff shampoo or scalp moisturizer. If your itchy scalp persists or gets worse, you may need to talk to your doctor.
